The Justin Chancellor Cry Baby Wah is a versatile tool for shaping sonic landscapes, incorporating three distinct effects into a single pedal. It includes a custom midrange filter, a custom wah circuit, and a vintage fuzz, making it an ideal fit for bass player Justin Chancellor's diverse role in Tool. Whether he is expanding soundscapes with chords and harmonies or synchronizing with guitarist Adam Jones for captivating single-note runs, Justin pushes the limits of his instrument to help create the band's complex music. He is recognized as one of the pioneers in using effects on bass and has a carefully crafted pedalboard to experiment with tones.
The custom Cry Baby Wah showcases some of his preferred methods for crafting sounds, including filter, wah, and fuzz. Offering U.K. Filter and Wah modes, the pedal features two distinct sonic variations. The U.K. Filter mode utilizes a custom solid-state circuit to replicate the envelope-like filtering of Justin's own instrument, resulting in a thick and throaty sound with pronounced peaks. When combined with the built-in fuzz mode, the U.K. Filter produces smooth, synth-like tones reminiscent of Justin's melodic phrasing in the Tool track "The Patient."
For a more traditional wah sound, the Wah mode utilizes a classic red Fasel Inductor and modified Cry Baby Wah circuitry. This mode delivers an aggressive sound with rich harmonics, cutting through with electric fire when paired with the built-in fuzz circuit. Each mode can be customized using separate Volume and Q controls, and can be easily switched between using the Wah Select footswitch.
The pedal's custom circuitry maintains the thickness and heft of the low end by boosting the clean signal at 400Hz and blending it with the effect signal at the beginning of the rocker's sweep. It also includes Justin's preferred fuzz, based on a vintage UK device, which offers a tight focus while retaining the thunderous heaviness of a bass signal.
Justin frequently uses the U.K. Filter mode on its own, and combines the Wah mode with fuzz using the optional Dunlop Pedal Topper for seamless engagement. The pedal is accompanied by the Tonebird bundle, which includes an MXR DCIS10 Cable, deluxe Dunlop microfiber cloth with polish, Tonebird TB9V power supply with 1500mA, and 3 patch cables.
